1992 Clos de Cazeaux Vacqueyras “Grenat Noble”

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Here’s a real curiosity. I was familiar with Vache’s Cuvee des Templiers, but this was a new one for me. The fatboy informed me that it’s made from botrytis-infected red grapes, principally Grenache. All I could tell was that it was massive and excruciatingly tannic. After a day of airing out, it became excruciatingly tannic and massive. If I had some, I’d wait many more years before trying it again.

1991 Clusel-Roch Côte-Rôtie

A good wine from a great vintage. Plush and mature, smoked raspberries. Not profound like Clusel-Roch’s Grandes Places, but easy to drink and well-balanced.

1989 Meyney St-Estephe

Excellent Bordeaux character, that combination of Creme de Cassis and tobacco. It’s somewhat let down by a rather coarse tannic structure, but nonetheless, quite drinkable. A few more years wouldn’t hurt.

1990 Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape

A lot of variability in this bottling. This was one of the very youthful, unresolved ones with rather lowish brett levels (relatively). Really great stuff, much in the mold of the ‘81.

1999 Allemand Cornas “Chaillots”

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

This was served out of a decanter a day or two after being opened. Like its stablemate Renards, it’s so brutally closed up and tannic as to be undrinkable at this point. Just lose it in the cellar for 10-15 years or so.
