2005 Foxen “Block 8″ Bien Nacido Pinot Noir

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Lovely bright red fruit nose with a dash of herbaceousness that cries out “Bien Nacido!”. As distinctive as the RRV, a rival with Bien Nacido as the best place in the state to grow Pinot. On the palate, the bright cherry/raspberry flavors shine through the judicious use of oak with enough tannin to warrant a couple more years of age. The little “tomatoey” characteristic that is a Foxen trademark sneaks in on the medium length finish. One concern is the acid level makes me suspicious that the wine was acidified. Legal yes, but it doesn’t bode well for ageability. Moe/Larry.

1985 Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon

Minty, oaky, lots of VA (nail polish). It started to get better with air, then collapsed into a stewed alcoholic mess. My 6th place. Group 4th place.

1985 Dominus Cabernet Sauvignon

Green and bretty, mint tea, rather diffuse flavors, finish reminds me of my first girlfriend (short and hot). Easy to spot as the Dominus. My 3rd place. Group 3rd place.

1985 Girard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Skunky, but not just a live skunk. Oh, no, It’s a dead skunk, guts splattered across the highway, sun blazing down. It takes everything I have to actually taste it. I’m rewarded by a fat, short, alcoholic glass of V-8. Really heinous, but I easily spot this one as the Girard. My 5th place. Group 7th place.

1985 Clos du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Mint and currant aromas, rather fat and sweet, rough finish. Gets volatile after a half-hour or so. My 1st place. Group 1st place.
