1991 Clusel-Roch Cote-Rotie, Grandes Places

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

A sobering lesson to me not to kill infants. The youthful oakiness has receded somewhat, appearing as a cinnamon-apple spice in the background. What’s up front is soy-marinated smoked meat, lilacs, and black licorice. But we could sense more, much more, locked away in a tannic embrace that may take another decade to loosen; the length and finish were impressive but not yet as well-defined as one could hope. A great wine for which it isn’t time. I’m going to write 100 times, “I will not open any more ‘91 Grandes Places for ten more years,” as punishment for statutory grape.

1998 Berthoud Syrah (Sonoma Valley)

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Also with an Arrowood connection, the ‘98 Berthoud Syrah (Sonoma Valley) is quite black and dense with surprisingly little syrah character; I might have guessed it to be an overoaked cabernet or merlot. Huge toasty oak, no acidity to speak of, very fat and flabby. One of the locals pointed out that this low-acid style is great for wines meant to be drunk on their own. OK, nice excuse. Alcohol runs well above what’s on the label, probably 14.5% or so. This will have to get about 400 points from Wine Advocate. Run right out, etc, etc, etc. I am on their list, just for the flipping potential.
